Environmental Data Technicians (EDT) work as part of a project team which includes a ddms
Project Manager and one or more Analysts, Technicians, Programmers and Data Validators.
EDTs perform data management and analysis services on large industrial environmental
remediation projects. Day‐to‐day duties include the tasks associated with managing, analyzing
and reporting analytical and field measurement data collected through various groundwater,
surface water, sediment and soil sampling events. More specifically, duties include
environmental database management, GIS maintenance and development, table and map
report preparation, and contributing towards frequent team meetings and client
communications. Generally, all tasks performed by an EDT will be done under the oversight of
an Environmental Data Analyst or Project Manager.

Environmental Data Technicians are expected to:

Team Contributions:

  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the EDM team as a whole through constant
  • improvement in workflow and skill sets at all levels. Further yourself through self‐learning and
  • guidance from Sr. Data Analysts and Analysts while providing guidance and instruction to
  • advance competency of other Technicians.
  • Be vigilant in identifying, communicating and eliminating waste of overproduction, time
  • (waiting), transportation, over processing, inventory (resources), movement and defects
  • throughout the data processing, analysis and reporting process.

Project Management Contributions:

  • Work directly with clients to field requests, deliver output and discuss complexities associated
  • with on‐going tasks (may include travel)
  • Contribute towards task effort estimation for the purposes of client proposal

Technical:

  • Import laboratory EDDs into environmental databases and “check‐in” by comparing against
  • chain of custodies and database valid values rules and schemas

  • Work with project Data Validators to ensure results of validation are accurately updated in the
  • database and positioned for reporting purposes
  • Create analytical chemistry result tables as requested by clients and for regular reporting
  • events. Tables generally compare data against regulatory standards.
  • Create and maintain project GIS platforms (acquire data, set projections, establish symbology,
  • enforce labeling logic)
  • Geodatabase (personal, file and/ or Spatial Data Engine) generation and maintenance
  • Generate maps and figures showing sampling results, plumes and groundwater elevation flow
  • Generate lithologic cross‐sections, fence diagrams and boring logs for reports from field data in
  • ArcGIS and other third‐party software (e.g., RockWorks and MVS)
  • Data formatting, entry and import utilizing potentially with sophisticated methods as necessary
  • including OCR technology and through the generation or macros and scripts
  • Update and maintain Project Portal project data including users, contacts, environmental data,
  • documents and ArcGIS Server spatial data and server configuration.
